Work Place?

Hi Every One,

Just a quick post today. Last night (my time) Si posted a picture of his work place and made a subtle suggestion that others do the same. I think it's interesting to see the place we all spend so much time crafting our miniatures, some of us spending a little more time staring off into space dreaming up ideas, right Si?? Any how, I couldn't very well leave Si out in the cold so I here are some snaps of my work place. The thing is, I don't have a work place exactly, how I would love to be able to leave my mess every where and shut the door. We have a study down stairs where the "study" is hopefully done by others but my spot is up here, yes, I am now sitting in that seat typing away on my laptop. Up here is one of our living areas so I have to keep it presentable, now I'm not going to pretend it is neat all the time but I have to at least try to keep it that way. The white cupboard is where I keep all my mini stuff, my tool box, wood, glue etc....... underneath the table you can see a soft box bursting at the seams with stuff I can't remember.

To my right is our Dollhouse, I couldn't very well show my work place with out it. I had never intended to until I had re done the out side to look like the Taby Manse I have posted about before, I think at the very bottom of my page there is a link to that post. Please remember Mia and I chose this look when she was 9 to go with the decor of her room, so the blue roof and shutters are not at all how i envisage Ambrosia Place to look. I'm sure when the time comes you will all give me plenty of guidance on how to achieve the look I want. Until then this is how she looks. I would like to show you the rest of my room as i have a nice view of the water behind me but there are a few recognisable houses in the view and considering my experience on the beach last year I don't want to give away where I live.

Just preempting a few questions, the Horse painting is a John Lee Joo For and whilst it doesn't quite fit the decor it is very special and I have to have it hanging, and yes that lump of twigs is a birds nest I found on the side of the road. The desk is actually a french polished dining table my father made and whilst it doesn't go with the coastal look I am to sentimentally attatch to get rid of it, the day bed my Grandfather made and like wise. Now you would wonder how someone with a furniture making family could not know what a Jig is??????

Well that took longer that I thought, now you can check mine out Si after I scrutinised yours!

Happy Minis every one and welcome to my new followers!

  1. Oh dear, your's and Simon's (and Irene's whose room is only new)tidiness and elegance puts me to shame. I am taking up the challenge however, probably with regret to come and am just loading pics now.

    1. Now Christine, I have seen your room and it's awesome! It looks like a place where things happen!
You know I dear not have a few things on the go for fear of mess, if you saw my studio that would be an entirely different matter.

    3. Hey Si,
The view going the other way is much better....we can see the water. I used to have my desk up against the window that looked out to the bay but I felt guilty because it took up to much of the view when we sat on the couch.

  3. WOW, what a lot of space and so much light, Fi, I love the design of the objects in the entire room and those paintings/artworks....really awesome!!!!!! I just have visited Si's blog and said that I ever want to show my room too, when it is cleaned!!!! But now I have seen your room, I think I don't dare it anymore ;). At my worktable there is a kind of organised mess :D, I work on several project at the same time, so it is always messy. I can't help it, but I love it, because when my table is empty it is not good....
    Lovingly, Loon ;)

  4. My dear Loon,

your up early......You know it isn't always this tidy but I happened to be lucky when Si made his post. If you saw my studio which is in another place it would be an entirely different matter. There is paint and canvas and mess and books all piled up, defiantly not tidy.

So this explains why I am not as productive as others.

  5. Dear Fiona, Now I am becoming curious about your studio.....I would love to see the mess, for every time I leave my small painting/hobby-room after spending a few hours in there I looks like there has been an explosion. Earlier on I was already playing with the idea of putiing a picture of this phenomenon on my blog, but I am almost sure I will lose followers because of it :-)
Anyway, I think you have a very nice place to live in and ít's lovely to see Ambrosia Place the way you made it with/on behalf of your daughter...
Have a nice sunday, Big Hug, Liduina

  6. Hello my Dear,

My studio is a real mess. At the moment every thing is packed up but once i work I have an explosion of my own. Even the way I look is an explosion, my kids laugh at me when I pick them up from School because I have paint on my face and in my hair......

I have to admit, I had to pack up my paints and brushes, I had pallets and turps on my desk before I took the photo, I leave that butchers paper there so I can throw away mess I make quickly.

  7. What a calm and tranquil space you have there Fi. I can imagine us having a cup of tea together and chatting for hours - so it's just as well I'm not there or you'd never get anything done.

  8. Oh wow, what a fantasticly light and spacious room! Love it Fiona! If it were my work space I would probably be staring out of the window most of the time. And so clean! And tidy. Wow. Well if it were my room it probably would stay tidy for very long.

I can understand you don't want to give away where you live. I am a very private person and don't like to share too much personal information on the internet.

    2. Well Josje,

it doesn't stay tidy for very long, if I get engrossed it builds up and up, and once I finish and look around me ......hmmm, not good!

Yes, I like my cushions too, there is a map of England on the small ones and I just love them.

    3. Hi Fiona, you probably guessed I meant to write 'wouldn't stay tidy for very long'. But you know how much light influences artists , maybe I would be inspired by the beautiful light and with a clearer mind I might keep a less cluttered work space. Haha!

I just saw your beds in progress, they're looking really good! I like the little touches of gold, just enough to make it interesting but not over the top.

    4. Haha, I did know what you meant. And it doesn't always look tidy believe me. It is a bit of a parents retreat up here so I try to not let it get out of hand.

A couple of years ago I couldn't work in my studio so I had to paint up here, and believe me it wasn't good, it was a definite no go zone! With all the light though it was perfect for painting.

I'm just working on the mattresses at the moment, I'm cutting up an old shirt of my husbands that has a ticking fabric, I hope it turns out okay.

    1. Hi AM,

I have said to Si before, lateness is't a thing in this timezone, Australians are very relaxed, I don't know what late is, actually I do, because I'm always late......

Yes I love that painting, he is a Malaysian Artist living in Australia, he is in his 80's now and was quite a controversial artist in his day. I met him and he invited me to his studio, lovely man. Google him if you like, he is very influenced by the symbolism of horse.
The other painting is by Nicholas Truscott, it's not in the right spot there and I have been meaning to move it for ages. It is a watercolour and the detail is amazing, I know you would fully appreciate the technical side to it, it really is beautiful. A lot the Art work I have was bought to go in my last house which was more traditional but I still love it all and I have a limited amount of space to hang it all, there are so many windows.

      Boy!! That was an essay!!

  13. What a beautiful space. You are so fortunate! I find it to be very inspiring because it has so much light and a view with trees. I only have my dining room table, a small kitchen island, the top of the stove (smiling), and a small space at the end of my kitchen counter. Everything has to be put away every day. So, it's sort of annoying when I really get involved with something. At mealtimes, I have to make a bit of space here and there to prepare my meals. And then I have to wash the dishes and tidy up as best as I can in the middle of everything. It's annoying but what can I do. You are one lucky girl!

  14. Hi Lucille,

Thank you, I do feel very fortunate, sometimes I wish I had a space of my own so I could make lots of mess and close the door, but at least when I stop to cook dinner I can leave it there until the next day.

I have tried to look for your blog Lucille but there doesn't seem to be a link. Thanks for stopping by and having a look, it sounds like you have your work cut out with 9 rooms in your dollhouse.

  15. Hi Fi! I'm very sorry but I don't have a blog. Perhaps in the future. I can't seem to decide. Perhaps when I have done a lot of work on the dollhouse, I might send you some pics if you are interested. But for now, I'm just working on the floors. This week, I will be ordering wallpaper. Oh, yes, sometimes when the bug hits me, I will build something, like a bed or a chair or a toy. Whatever the muse feels like doing, I just go with it. I have all the lights for the house and all the wiring equipment. Like you say, I do have a lot to do but others have done it before me and I am much encouraged when I look at what some bloggers have accomplished. Just as an example, are you familiar with Mary's Dollhouse Nook? When I look at what she has done, it just spurs me on. I am not an accomplished miniaturist but I must say, I have come a long way since I have discovered all the dollhouse blogs. There is so much to learn and it's all out there thanks to all those wonderful people who share their knowledge.

  16. Hi Lucille,

You know my story is similar to yours. I started reading and commenting on peoples blogs long before I had one. I really haven't done that much with my dollhouse and certainly was very inexperienced ( I still am) when I started. You are right about learning so much from all the wonderful miniaturists out there. I really think you should start your blog regardless of how much work you have done on it. It is so much fun and it will help you document the work you are doing. I would certainly be one of your first followers.

I would love to see some photos if you would like to share them. Please don't feel pressure if you don't. leave me your email address here and I will delete it as soon as I get it, then I will send you mine.

  18. Thanks Fi for the snoop into your workspace - that table is such a good size for working at and it's nice to see your mini house too. I don't think we've seen a pic of that before.

What have I started with the workspace photos? As I said to Si, I can't find anything - heaven knows how many times I turn in a circle in the middle of the floor just looking for stuff. It was easier to lay my hands on things when it was all stuffed in the cupboards under the houses!!

    1. Well, maybe one of these days I'll be 'brave' enough to show you ;)

It's not so terribly hot here but I'm very recently back from several weeks in the south of New Zealand so I am really feeling the humidity. Of course the perfect solution would be to go and work down in the garage, the coolest place I could find, but I seem to have so many demands on my time getting settled back into what passes for 'normal life' for the year that any thought of that will have to wait a bit.

  21. OK! What have you done with all the clutter!? Where is it, that CAN'T be where you work, it's not HUMAN to be that neat!! ;o)

It all looks very calm and tranquil, great contemplation space! Beautiful paintings, and if I am not mistaken a fabulous Eames DSW chair! Lucky lady having a 20th century design classic to perch on!

Now what else can I see? Mia's shop, is that a Christmas tree in the window? Lots of beautifully arranged cushions (you would get on very well with David by the way!!) ah! there's Ambrosia Place!

I like it with the blue shutters, but know you want to change it. I remember Tabby Manse, and think your dolls' house would suit that style very well.

Where is your computer? Is it that TINY silver thing on the table? How do you manage to see so much detail ( I was telling Simon on his last post that you notice EVERYTHING in the photos we all post!) on that tiny screen?

Well I think I imagined a work space filled with light and air, and filled with interesting things, so it's been great to see it! Thanks for letting us pry into your home. It's like that old show, 'Through the Keyhole' with Lloyd Grossman!!

    A Bientot!

  22. My dearest Andy,

ALL the clutter is inside that cupboard and if I opened the doors you would know I am a complete fraud! I did of course tidy all my paints up and put them in the cupboard before I took the photo.I have to admit that is a replica Eams...how I wish to have the real thing!

Yes Ambrosia Place is very little girl on the outside but I think it can be rectified, I'm at least happy I bought a nice quality one so it will take the revamp. I need to get cracking on it though because I will have to take it out side if I want to make a mess and the weather will start to cool down soon.

Yes, that is Mia's shop gathering dust *shakes head* little miss social butterfly I think has left it to me to finish. And yes that is my lap top I spy on you all with, I can't see a damn thing without my glasses though and you do realise I was trained to notice every detail, my boss would come and inspect our windows at night and if there was the tinniest speck of dust left there would be hell to pay!!! I learnt to take it all in purely out of fear!!

I love your knowledge of old shows Andy....
