Twin beds.

Hello Every one,

My New Year resolution was to post as I go. Not only does it keep me more in touch, but it doesn't seem like such a mammoth job to explain how I did each detail once I have completed the room. So, win, win! Here is one of my stages ( kits to start after this one) for the Twins room, I have two Iron beds from Pheonix  which I have painted off white. I used oil paint to paint the metal as it is more likely to stay put and not flake off, the only thing is the drying between coat times. I use liquin Original that helps speed up the drying time. I don't want a pristine look to Ambrosia Place, patina is one of my favourite things so I am now adding a bit of age and rust to the iron. I have added just a touch of faded gold for a high light but I don't want to over do it. I also painted in the little casters in the bottom as I think they are a nice little detail of the moulds. In my final photos I will show a close up.

Well thats it for today. Welcome to my new followers and enjoy your minis every one!

P.S. I forgot to add the one on the right is has the finished detail, the others were still waiting but are now done!! Yay!!

  1. You did a great job painting and aging your beds.

I also bought this (double bed) kit and painted it with Humbrol oil paints. You're right it takes forever for the paint to dry. I think I put on 4 coats in all. Painting it in gloss black and I mixed up a tarnished brass color. I had so much trouble with bending that soft metal while I was working on it. Still... I was VERY happy with the finished bed. XXX

  2. Wow Catherine, that sounds amazing.
I imagine the gloss black would show up every brush stroke, no wonder you did four coats, I did three with these. I'll have to go and check out your bed.

  3. Your beds look great and oil based paint is better for painting metal although the drying time is frustrating, guess that is why I like embroidery so much, it gives me something nice and relaxed to do while I wait for glue, paint or whatever to dry or set.

Have a wonderful weekend, hope you have lots of time for miniatures..

    1. Hi Elga,

Now you have me thinking, embroidery, hmmmm.....I'm not quite up to that standard yet, I think I will start with the basic stitching, I have pillows and cushions to make for the beds, that should keep me going while they dry.

  6. Hi honey
The beds look fantastic, well done. I do like an iron bed frame!
I was going to apologise for being late but remembered your last reply about the time difference etc, it did make me laugh. I always forget that small factor!
The aged patina is so subtle but very effective.
    Have a great day -x-

  14. Dear Fi, this is awesome "aging" work, better on the beds then us, don't you think ;)?? You did a great job with the aging process, dear. Painting on metal is always a job of patience, like Elga and the others mentioned, but then you have your beds you like, isn't it?
Now the bedding, sewing behind the table and sometimes looking through the window.........ah!
    Lovingly, Ilona

  18. Hi Fi,

The beds are beautiful, you've done a super job on them! I love the distressed look, with aged gold detail!

I have used Humbrol enamel paint on my metal kits, never thought of using oil paint before, might try that, as enamel paint takes ages to dry and needs SO many coats!

Look forward to seeing the bedroom unfold, like the bedding!!! (Argh! needles!!!)

  19. Hi Andy,

Yes Catharine said she used Humbrol paint which is obviously the correct model paint but I didn't think of that at the time. I think is you wanted a shinier finnish then Humbrol would be the way to go, the oil was quite a matte finnish which worke for the look I was going for.

Haha, I was thinking of you last night as I was sewing my mattress.....hehehe!
